‘Star Wars: The Clone Wars – Kidnapped’ Review

I have to admit as great as the last four episodes on Umbara were it was nice to finally return the focus to Anakin and Ahsoka. We have barely gotten to see much of them so far this season and while most of it has been great I did miss their presence.

Kidnapped was an interesting episode of Clone Wars. The Separatist general was a slave trader back in the day and that caused Anakin to seek revenge.  Anakin’s past before Phantom Menace is probably better than that whole movie by itself and this was a rare opportunity to explore that. While we didn’t find out exactly what the connection between Anakin and this group of slave traders is the details may have been best left unsaid.

This episode also delivered on action starting with a very cool speeder bike chase that reminded us just how awesome Ahsoka can be. Another interesting move here was Obi Wan fighting the general in hand-to-hand combat. It was pretty cool seeing the Jedi exchanging powerful blows with the general but I was pretty disappointed to see how quickly he went for his lightsaber when he had the opportunity. It would have been nice to have Obi Wan prove himself a bit more versatile in hand-to-hand.

The climax was pretty great too as Anakin and Ahsoka flew to the general’s escaping ship. The monster he unleashed on them was among the coolest we have seen on the show. I also loved how Ahsoka defended herself saying that she is not so young anymore. Plus we got some pretty dark stuff with Anakin towards the end as he held his lightsaber to the general’s throat.

While most of what happened in Kidnapped was pretty good, there were very few things that especially stood out to make it more than a good episode of Clone Wars. With the ending it mostly felt like set-up for next week, which is fine because if we get an even more vengeful Anakin in the next episode it has the potential to be incredible. (8/10)
