‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia – Chardee MacDennis: The Game of Games’ Review
To be honest, this is one of the best constructed episodes I have seen of this show ever. Everything in this episode was perfect. The plot of this episode had the gang playing a legendary drinking game that they created amongst themselves, and by created I mean stole from other board games. Frank however, like the viewer, had never played this game and was therefore slowly introduced to all the confusing rules.
Actually if I had one problem with this episode it was that the rules of the game were a bit hard to follow, but Charlie quickly addressed that he never really knows what is going on to remedy this one issue. Otherwise this was a half hour of brilliance and perfection.
The set up to the game was fantastic as the the four younger characters explained to Frank their past experiences with the game. This is when we learn that Charlie and Mac have never won. Frank joins their team and the game begins with a hysterical scene of the two teams sipping wine together with classical music in the background.
The tone quickly switched however to the hardcore gameplay of Chardee MacDennis. After the great set up I didn’t expect the game to live up to my expectations but it did. The whole game was wonderfully constructed as we were shown the rules and the game honestly looked like a lot of fun to plays. One of the funniest moments involved Frank in a dog cage and Dennis kicking him and throwing beer in his face.
The ending was pretty brilliant too with the “black card”. The reveal of what was on the card was, again, something I didn’t think would live up to my expectations but did. The same goes for the overall outcome and winner of the game.
This episode was It’s Always Sunny at its finest. Fans of the show will likely be trying out Chardee MacDennis this weekend. I wish them all luck. (10/10)
