‘Rum Diary’ Trailer A Bit Too Familiar
Remember that movie where Johnny Depp did a lot of drugs and drank a lot of alcohol and talked in a very matter-of-fact tone for 2 hours? Well it’s coming back to theaters! Wait, you mean to say that the preview I just watched isn’t for Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas? Are you sure? Oh Hollywood.
After all that silliness you probably think I hated the new trailer for The Rum Diary. The truth is I didn’t, I just believe that there is a lot to be concerned about because clearly director Bruce Robinson is trying to mimic Terry Gilliam’s unique style. I know that both movies are based on books written by the same author so the similarities in tone are necessary to adapt The Rum Diary correctly, however this looks like a sequel to Fear and Loathing. I actually just Googled it to make sure that it isn’t supposed to be.
A trailer that would have me more excited would include a movie that looks for a voice of its own rather than imitating another’s. The Rum Diary doesn’t look bad as the trailer offers some decent humor, however I may skip out on this one because to be honest, gulp, I didn’t care for Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Check out the trailer below and post your thoughts in the comment section!
