‘Mass Effect’ Movie Moving Forward?
It was recently announced that Legendary Pictures would be bringing the Mass Effect movie to San Diego Comic Con. I’m sorry, what? When? Who? Could what is largely considered to be the most cinematic gaming experience of all time be heading to the big screen? In this writer’s opinion, hopefully not.
I am a huge fan of the Mass Effect video games. They don’t just boast fun gameplay and amazing technical achievements but they have told a great story with some of the most unique and sympathetic characters a video game has ever seen.
However the best part of the Mass Effect series is the fact that the player’s decisions have a very real impact on the outcome of the overall story. No two players of the series have all the same outcomes or plot threads. This is something that cannot translate to film. Audience members will not get their own singular experience by going to the movie theater as they will sitting at home controlling the events. Without the interactivity, Mass Effect is more or less a typical space-opera, an extremely well done one at that, but still, a Mass Effect movie would automatically be compared Star Wars and Star Trek in terms of originality.
Also, we have yet to see a well done video game movie adaptation (okay, I do heavily enjoy the Resident Evil movie series but mostly in a so bad its good way, mostly…). Frankly the best people who could write a Mass Effect movie are the people who wrote the game, and unless they are involved, there is no way that this can be a good adaptation.
But I will absolutely be there on opening day. I will be there for the same reason that Twilight fans flock to god awful movies adaptations. No, not Taylor Lautner’s abs…a love of the source material. In the mean time, we shall have to wait an see. Though this does add a bit of spice to what looked to be a rather dull Comic Con year.
