Is ‘South Park’ Coming to an End?

Whoa. Did anyone see that coming? After 15 seasons, it looks like South Park might be coming to an end. Last night’s episode, appropriately titled ‘You’re Getting Old’, was a terrible episode of the show, except for the closing minutes, which shed light on the show failing to live up to what it used to be.

The plot of the episode revolved around Stan’s 10th birthday making him see everything as sh*t. There are no movies, music, TV shows, or video games that appeal to him. Trey Parker and Matt Stone express this with one thing and one thing only, fart jokes. This is where the episode fails. Nearly all of these fart jokes fall flat. The only one that I remember making me legitimately chuckle was the preview for Mr. Popper’s Penguins. Otherwise, everything in this episode fell flat, but this ended up serving a higher purpose.

The end of the episode involved Stan’s parents separating, with no happy ending for Stan who can still only see the sh*t in everything. With quotes coming from the characters such as “its the same thing every week” and “I don’t know how much longer I can do this”, it seems clear that the creators are trying to say something to their audience.  Trey Parker and Matt Stone are tired of making South Park. That even hurt to type. Suddenly all the sh*t jokes make sense as a self parody of the falling quality of the show so far this season.

Fifteen years is a long time to be doing the same show, and the duo has recently seen success on Broadway with The Book of Mormon. With their contracts up after the season, maybe its time for South Park to come to an end. However I would not be surprised if they came back in the fall and the story reset to normal as it does every episode. It could be the best practical joke on an audience of all time, or it could be the end of an era. Knowing them we wont know until the next episode starts in the fall, but for now, I am on the edge of my seat and preparing to mourn a TV landscape without South Park. (6/10)
