‘The Lion King’ Coming toTheaters Again in 3-D
Time magazine is reporting that The Lion King will be re-released in theaters upgraded to the 3D format.
The Disney film is already set for an October release of a limited edition 3-D Blu Ray, as well as the regular Blu Ray. Movies being re-released in 3-D is a growing trend as George Lucas previously announced that his entire Star Wars saga will be re-released in 3-D.
Most critics are very unsure of necessity of 3-D as it many times seems like a gimmick from the studio to make more money. After all, The Lion King is animated in 2-D, like most Disney features before Toy Story and the age of Pixar. This likely means that it will not look as good as the studio anticipates.
Personally, I am ready for this 3-D fad to be put to rest. There is no denying that the technology used for the 3-D rendering of Avatar was incredible, but even films shot in that format have yet to achieve what James Cameron did. The 3-D in Thor was only distracting. If I decide to watch The Lion King with those big, bulky glasses, it will only be for the fact that I do not remember seeing it on the big screen (I was at the ripe age of 3). Nostalgia is a much better angle than 3-D; Disney I’m talking to you.
